We have a range of both locum and permanent biomedical science jobs available for strong candidates. Disciplines include, but are not limited to, biochemistry, haematology, microbiology and phlebotomy.
Biomedical scientists work in laboratories, usually within a hospital, to carry out a range of tests that help with the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Investigations might include blood tests, testing on other fluids including cerebrospinal fluid, and preparing blood for transfusions.
Biomedical scientists may help with investigations for:
Biomedical scientists are proficient in working with software reporting systems, using automated equipment and microscopes. When a patient is unwell, results are required promptly. Biomedical scientists job candidates work well under pressure and may need to liaise directly with doctors or nurses via telephone to discuss abnormal results. With a wide range of investigations performed within laboratories, biomedical scientists can work in a variety of roles to further their experience and skills.
To work as a biomedical scientist, you must have a BSc (Hons) healthcare degree in life sciences, or an accredited degree in biomedical science. Biomedical scientists must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to work in the UK.
It is important that biomedical scientists are meticulous in providing accurate results to clinicians, even in time critical situations. You should have an interest in both science and technology, and always be willing to learn new skills and techniques. As a locum, you will form part of the laboratory team and will need to quickly develop a professional, friendly working relationship with your new colleagues.
A biomedical scientist typically starts their career earning at least £24,907. Depending on the exact role, level of experience and responsibility, biomedical scientists can earn over £90,000 at the height of their career. Locum biomedical science job candidates can expect to earn a higher day rate than those permanently staffed by a hospital. Locum rates may range from £23-35 per hour, depending on experience, location and the job role. Biomedical scientists are needed around the clock within hospitals, performing investigations for the sickest patients at night-time and during weekends. Working these hours often leads to an uplifted rate which could be up to 1.5 times the standard hourly rate.
There is plenty of scope to develop professionally and specialise as a biomedical scientist. As a locum, you may be exposed to a greater range of techniques and investigations, providing a superb breadth of experience.

During a shift, a locum biomedical scientist job will involve many of the same tests as a permanent member of staff. However, there are differences between the two job roles. Locum work is usually more flexible, with locums choosing the days and hours they wish to work. Not being bound by a hospital rota can allow locums to fit their career around childcare, holidays or additional study.
Being a locum means being able to adapt to new teams and responsibilities quickly. Whereas a staffed biomedical scientist will have spent time getting to know the rest of the team, as a locum you will need to quickly develop a relationship with your team members, as well as understanding the clinical processes within each individual laboratory. Many locums enjoy the flexibility and variety of their work and are able to learn new skills on a regular basis.
