Podiatrists are highly trained healthcare professionals who focus on the health of the feet and lower limbs. Podiatrists work in a number of areas including sports medicine, diabetes, injection therapy, exercise regimes and on casting techniques. Their over-arching aim is to relieve pain, treat any infections, keep people mobile and active, and to prevent and correct deformity.
Podiatrists can become highly specialised in their field. One example could be working with patients who have diabetes and are at risk of developing ulcers in their feet. Diabetic foot checks aim to identify signs of nerve or vessel damage so that serious foot injuries and infections can be avoided. Another common specialism might be in degenerative changes in the foot. Arthritis related to age, repetitive movements or injuries can be helped with the addition of medications, special shoes or inserts to aid the positioning of the foot.
A patient might see a podiatrist privately or via an NHS service for:
Podiatrists can see a broad spectrum of patients dependent on their job role, and there is plenty of scope for professional development.
Podiatrists complete a Podiatry degree at university prior to working as a podiatrist. Podiatrists must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to work in the UK. Podiatrists may work with patients of all ages, but as degenerative foot changes and diabetes tend to affect older members of the population, many patients will be elderly. Podiatrists must be compassionate and thoughtful, and take a whole person approach when treating a patient. Enquiring about whether a patient can easily tie up shoelaces, or if they might require a walking aid, for example, are simple considerations that can make a big difference to a patient’s quality of life. Being a solution-focused podiatrist can have a positive impact on patients.
Podiatrists often work at Band 5 level of the NHS Agenda for Change. Usually, this equates to a salary ranging from £25,000 to £30,000 per annum. Podiatry specialists can expect to earn more, and an advanced podiatrist could earn up to £46,000 each year. Podiatrists are in great demand, and there can be a significant waiting list for patients. Locum podiatrists are often needed to ensure all patients can be seen promptly following a referral. As waiting lists can be very long, some patients will choose to be seen privately. There is therefore also scope for private Locum work within podiatry.
Locum podiatrists often receive a higher hourly rate than a staffed podiatrist. Generic Locum roles can pay between £19 and £30 per hour, with specialists earning even more.

A Locum podiatry job involves many of the same duties as a staffed member of the podiatry team. Patients can be seen within a hospital, health centre, residential home, outpatient clinic or at home. Locum podiatrists will review patients with a range of foot or lower limb complaints, which could include pain, skin changes or deformities. A podiatrist must take a history, examine the foot or leg, and then offer appropriate treatment.
Whereas a staffed podiatrist will get to know their team very well, a Locum will need to quickly build rapport with staff and patients alike. Many Locum podiatrists enjoy the buzz of working in new environments whilst being able to select shifts that suit them. You can check out our latest available positions and read testimonials from some of our current Locum podiatrists to see if Locum work could be right for you.
